Note Obituary: John Pell "Jack" Collins of Livingston died Wednesday at his home, after a great life. He was 85. Jack was bom in a farmhouse on Mount Pleasant Avenue in Livingston on March 13, 1923. His ancestors settled in the Livingston area in the 1700s and the Collins family was among the founders of the township in 1813. He married the former Melisa nde Beldon and they raised three sons and two daughters in Livingston. A graduate of West Orange High School, Jack served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II in the European Theatre of Operations. He was a civilian' communications specialist with the Department of the Army, serving in Korea during th at conflict. He retired from the N.J. Bell Telephone Company as a manager after 42 years of service and, thereafter, pursued a career as a real estate salesman with the Joseph W. Zahn Agency in Livingston. Jack was elected to the Livingston Board of Education .in 1969 and served as president and vice president In 1976 he was elected to the Livingston Township Council and served for eight years. In 1982 he was appointed mayor of Livingston. He was chairman of the Livingston Bicentennial Celebration Committee and was a member of the Kiwanis Club, VFW, Livingston Republican Club and the Old Guard. Surviving Jack are his <i>wife, </i>"Sande"; children, Roger and Linda Collins, John and Robin Collins, Jeff and Carol Coffins, Valerie and Michael Fletcher, and Cynthia Collins; sisters, Audrey Dowd and Adele Hedden; eight grandchildren an d two great-grandchilT dren. Jack will make his last public appearance at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home of Livingston, 145 E, Mount Pleasant Ave., on Sunday, May 4, from 2 to 6 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the Presbyterian Church of Livingston, 271 W. Northfiel d Rd., at l0 a.m, on May 5. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the "Actors Theatre of Indiana," 160 W. Carmel Dr., Suite 207, Carmel Ind. 46032. Aunt Joan wrote this at the bottom of the copy she sent me: Jack is Auntie Dell's son. Since no mention is made of his grandfather John Ashby & grandmother Emily Buhle Ashby, I think the obit was written by one of his sons. P.S. Pell is also a very old name in Livingston.
