William Spencer Ashby was born Jan. 4, 1838 in Chatham, NJ, son of Julia-Ann Spencer, youngest daughter of William Spencer and Apphia Genung, and William Ashbee b, Jan. 14, 1796 in Herne Bay, Kent, England. He was the third of five children (Geo rge, John Harvey, William, Amelia, and Lyman) and his mother. Julia Ann died shortly after Lyman's birth. The senior William Ashbee settled on a small farm in Livingston on South Orange Avenue, where he struggled with his small family. Affie Gen ung Spencer, likely watched over young William and the others until her death in 1857. Affie had a considerable estate, which was divided among numerous heirs and held in trust for William until he turned 21. He apparently purchased the farm fro m his father (who the Spencers determinedly kept out of the will), and later established a new farm on East Cedar Street and Sycamore Road.
William S. Ashby was known as a good farmer, using many of the newest techniques and built a prosperous farmstead. He married a neighbor in Northfield, Mary Ann Agar July 3, 1859. The couple and their family joined the Livingston Baptist Church , daughter church of the Northfield Baptist. The family was prominent in Livingston affairs; his sons William (Bill) Everett and John Ashby were both on the town council. Bill was the first police chief and John the first fire chief. John wa s a builder and Ashby Avenue was his creation. |
