Burial | Riverview cemetery has been around since 1864 where it was operated by The Methodist Church until 1933. Due to difficulty in the cost of maintaining the cemetery, the church turned it over to the non-profit corporation operated by the Riverside Cemetery Board.
The Beginning
In 1864 the White Church, now known as Grace United, purchased two acres of land from Richard Cartwright to start the cemetery. More land was acquired throughout the years bringing Riverview to its current size of six acres. Some of the land that was purchased includes the Isaiah Huffman family Burial Ground which has headstones dating back to 1841.
Like the Riverside cemetery, Riverview has had multiple names throughout the years including The Huffman Cemetery, The Western Cemetery and finally its present name, Riverview Cemetery
The Riverview Cemetery was originally operated by a Methodist church for 69 years from 1864 until 1933. The cost of maintaining the cemetery was too high and it was turned over to a not for profit company, The Napanee Cemetery Company. |
