Note: Obituary from The Clio messenger., April 20, 1922, Page 1
Obituary from The Clio messenger., April 20, 1922, Page 1 Tinker William Tinker. Jr., son of William and Lavina-Rathburn Tinker, was born in Ashtabula Co., Ohio, July 22d, 1837. On December 9th, 1857, he was united in marriage to Miss Selirie Fox, who survives him. To this union five children were born, Dr. Frank Tinker, of Lapeer, Mich., Mrs. Edith Cates and Harry Tinker, of Vienna Township, Mrs. Lena Scoutten, of Coleman, Mich., and Florence, who passed away in 1884. From early youth he was associated with his father (until the death of the latter in 1899) in the machine and foundry business, doing a man's work at the age of 14 years. They were among the first to invent and manufacture threshing and mowing machines and other farm implements. In 1864, Mr. Tinker and his father came to Pine Run, Mich., and erected the foundry and machine shop, which was destroyed by fire March 10th. 1913, where they engaged in manufacturing steam engines and machinery for the lumbering business. On the decline of the lumber business in this locality, Mr. Tinker bought timber land and erected a shingle mill at Averill, Mich., which he operated until 1876, when he returned to Pine Run and with his father commenced the manufacture of farm implements, doing also general repair work. Later, they made and installed machinery for the manufacture of cheese boxes, and also for making potato crates, which business was continued for several years, during which time William Tinker, Sr., died. In 1900 Mr. Tinker made machinery for making cider and apple jelly, which business he continued to operate until the foundry and machine shop were destroyed by fire as above noted. Before the fire cooled off he commenced to clear away and plan the erection of a small shop to work in and in which he continued to work until nearly the last. After a long and active life he passed away April 10th, 1922, at the' home of his son, Harry, in Thetford. Beside the children mentioned above, Mr. Tinker is survived by two sisters and one brother, Mrs. Ida Sheldon, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and Mrs. John K. Frost and O. F. Tinker, well known residents of this locality. Another sister, Mrs. Ellen Underhill, passed away a few years ago. It is but just to the memory of the departed to say that he was a splendid type of manhood, kind and loving as a husband and father, ambitious that his children should fill honored and useful stations in life, filling such a station himself, and being the soul of honor in all of his relationships with his fellow men. Truly will his memory be treasured by the many friends who came to know him during his long- and active -career in this vicinity and to each and evervone of them it will be an inspiration to right living. Funeral services were held from the late home of the deceased in Pine Run on Thursday afternoon. Rev. Joseph Dibley officiating, and were very largely attended. The interment was in the family lot in Pine Run cemetery.
