after being struck by a B&O passenger train while crossing the track at Brown's Bridge 2nd Ave on the morning of Sunday, March 31st. He succombed to his injuries Beginning in 1890, there are directories of Homestead. Charles is shown living first at 31 Eleventh Avenue then at 37 Eleventh Avenue. It is my opinion that the "31" is probably a typo. He shows up in these directories from 1890-1894. Then in 1896 Mary is listed as a widow. The directories also went from annual to every 2 years. We believe Charles died sometime between '95 & '96. May 30th 2013 we contacted the Mifflin Historical Society to find out about getting an obituary for him. June 11th 2013 MHS emailed us Mary (Nelson) Gustafson's obituary. In her obit I found out about Charles' death. It is in the evening edition of the March 19, 1904 Homestead News-Messenger. In her obituary it states, "Since the death of husband Charles Gustafson, who was killed on the B & O Railroad nine years ago..." Oct 2nd 2014 On our 2014 trip while in Pittsburgh, PA we found the obit for Charles. We also found that there was a coroner's inquest ordered by doctor J.J. Buchanan. Following is a transcription of that order: Mercy Hospital Pittsburgh April 1 1895 To HEBER McDOWELL, Coroner. Dear Sir: Please hold an Inquest on the body of Name Charles Gustafson Residence#36-11th St. Homestead Age: 72 years _____months _____days.
