Note | June 2015
Today I'm listening to "all" the music in my database on shuffle. One of the CD's is American Military Band, and when the Marine's Hymn came on, I was reminded that my mom loved listening to marching band music. Ever since she told me that, I was about 40 when she told me, I love to hear the marching tunes myself. Leilani

Today I was working on a big remodel or house addition, as my Uncle Hank used to call them, the stucco guys were outside nailing on the lathe with country music blaring. Doris was into country, and we used to talk about how it had changed over the years. Today an old Christmas song came on and I felt a little sad and reminiscent at first, but by the time it was over I was almost giggling out loud.
When Doris's husband Bill died we moved her down from Oregon to California and it was decided that we should build her a little "Mother-in-Law" House on our land. The only problem was, - Me and Leilani hadn't finished building our house yet and we were still living in a 32 foot trailer. So Doris bought herself a little trailer about 15 foot long and we parked it on the edge of our driveway, and that is where she lived until we finished our house.
She spent a lot of evenings visiting us in the "Big Trailer" and during the days leading up to Christmas there would be cups of Christmas cheer and a lot of laughing all around. When the time came for Doris to go home to the "Little Trailer" it would be quite the event of bundling up for the journey, well, it was usually close to 30 degrees.
Today, I could still hear me and Brian belting out "Grandma was run over by a reindeer walking home from our house Christmas Eve" I could picture Doris standing there by the door with her big coat, gloves, scarf and snow boots heading out for her trek--all of 20 feet, grinning and saying "you guys" She was always such a good sport.
I realized that was a very good Christmas memory.
Merry Christmas Doris

Stories my mom told me.
When I was 1-2 years old, my mother would take the bus. Because we lived on base, there were a lot sailors, getting on and off the bus as well. She said every time one would get on, I would gleefully holler out, "Daddy". Of course she was so embarrassed, to have everyone on the bus looking at her, especially the sailor who didn't know her from Adam!
At least once while driving across the runway in Hawaii, in our Cadillac convertible, mom had picked up too much speed and had my brother George holding down the roof to keep it from flying open. |
